The
Cancer Survivors’ Fund Gala was held on March 14, 2003 with 180 guests
in attendance. The guests included prominent Houstonians, Presidents of several Rotary Clubs,
Rotarians, M.D. Anderson staff, consular staff, community leaders and
businessman. Tiana Cornelius, Umut Unver, Billy Watkins III and Vanessa
Kelly, a few of the students supported by the organization, were also at hand to present
tributes. Vocal performance by Tiana
Cornelius, enhanced the evening with
color and excitement.
Eugenie Kleinerman, M.D., Professor, M.D. Anderson Cancer
Center and Donna Copeland, Clinical Psychologist, M.D. Anderson Cancer
Center delivered keynote speeches. The emcee for the evening was
Houston’s own Ron Stone.
Our founder Yeshim Yonter’s
presentation, which
received a standing ovation, was realistic and exceptionally emotional.
She concluded with a challenge to all of us who have a soft heart
for cancer survivors.
“I challenge you tonight to consider “Why not
me? What could my support bring to the life of another young adult, a young adult
saying, ‘Why me?’” Your pivotal support signifies hope and creates
opportunities. Let’s make more futures shine brightly --- together!”
