Cancer Survivors’ Fund Celebrity Golf Classic 

A HUGE SUCCESS

 

The First Annual Cancer Survivors' Fund of Houston Celebrity Golf Classic was completed on Monday, October 17, 2005 at the Deerwood Club at the Clubs of Kingwood.

The event, in which golfers in each foursome were joined by celebrities from the NBA, MLB, Harlem Globetrotters, and local media personalities, has raised over $43,000 for the organization.

This year's inaugural Cancer Survivors' Fund was dedicated to the memory of prominent Fulbright & Jaworski Attorney Ronald G. Bliss. Ron Bliss was a decorated Vietnam War fighter pilot who spent 6 ½ years in a POW camp. Ron headed Fulbright & Jaworski Intellectual Property department from 1986 to 2001 and grew the department from 7 to more than 120 attorneys. Ron was always a survivor, a role model to many and an optimist even after the hardship of Vietnam and the later diagnosis of cancer in 1998. Ron lost his courageous battle this year.

 CSF created the “Ronald G. Bliss Outstanding Achievement Award and $10,000 Scholarship” in Ron’s honor in 2004.

Cancer Survivors’ Fund is a charity established to help those who survived cancer. CSF has the unique ability to recognize potential buried beneath tragedy. We proudly call ourselves the “Dream Makers.” We select our recipients from youths who have been “left behind” because of their struggle with cancer and its aftermath and who are unable to receive help from other sources.

The Cancer Survivors’ Fund, one the fastest growing charities in Houston and a member of Better Business Bureau, has awarded hundreds of thousands dollars in scholarships and prosthetic appliances to many young cancer survivors since 1999. Currently nineteen CSF students are enrolled in institutions of higher education, transforming their lives from surviving to thriving. They are pursuing dreams that they once thought impossible to achieve. And, we are helping them.
